Born: Bronx, New York
Lived: Shelton

Robert Mansfield Shields, 97, of Shelton passed away peacefully on October 11, 2018. Born May 24, 1921 in the Bronx, New York, Bob was the son of the late Professor William T. Shields and Mary (Mansfield) Shields. Blessed to have enjoyed two happy marriages, Bob was predeceased by his first wife of 44 years, Martha Mulligan Shields, and by his second wife of 10 years, Jeanie Poster Shields. He was predeceased by his three brothers, William, John and Charles. Bob is survived by his son Robert Mansfield Shields, Jr and daughter-in-law Susan Kelley of Woodbridge, grandson Christopher Shields of New York City, and granddaughter Rachel Shields of Philadelphia. Like his brothers, Bob attended Fordham Prep and Fordham University where his father was a member of the faculty for 35 years. Immediately after college graduation, Bob entered the United States Navy and saw considerable active duty as an officer aboard an LST in the South Pacific during World War II. After completing his service as a Lieutenant Senior Grade, he returned to the States and entered Fordham University Law School from which he graduated in 1949. He married Martha on September 10, 1949, the same day he received the news he had passed the New York State bar exam. Bob spent nearly all his legal career as a trial counsel for Allstate Insurance Company and worked briefly on a part-time basis as a member of the Connecticut Bar before retirement. Bob was always in good spirits and spread joy to those around him. An avid golfer, he did not permit his admittedly limited skill to detract from his enjoyment of the sport. He travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Caribbean with Martha and spent many winters enjoying the warm Florida sun with Jeanie. A prodigious reader, Bob especially loved music and was both a band and glee club member during his college days. He was a devout Catholic and served as a lector at St. Annís Church in Bridgeport where he was a parishioner for more than 30 years after his family moved from New York. The family is grateful for the wonderful support and sense of community Bob enjoyed at Crosby Commons, an assisted living community operated by the United Methodist Homes in Shelton. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning October 19 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York where Bob will be buried alongside Martha. The family is also indebted to the care providers from Always Best Care in Milford and to the Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut, Inc. Memorial contributions may be made to Crosby Commons, 580 Long Hill Avenue, Shelton, CT 06484. Friends may leave condolences at www.riverviewfh.com
