Florence Stapor, age 86, wife of the late Joseph J. Stapor, MD, and daughter of the late Charles and Anna Gurdak, died May 5, 2011 after a long battle with Parkinsonís Disease. Florence was born on December 20, 1924, in Meriden, CT. She grew up in Derby and moved to Orange, after her marriage in 1956, where she lived for 50 years. Florence graduated from the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing and she also earned a BS degree, in nursing, from the University of Bridgeport. She was the first person in her family to ever earn a college degree. As a student nurse in WWII, Florence enlisted in the newly created Cadet Nurse Corps, and she was stationed at the US Naval Hospital in St. Albans, NY. After graduation in 1945, Florence worked in the delivery room of Bridgeport Hospital. She was also employed as an OB/GYN nurse for the late Dr.ís McLean and Lyddy. After raising her children, she returned to work as an industrial nurse at the former Atlantic Aerospace Corp. in Newington, CT. Florence was a member of the Catholic Womenís guild at Holy Infant Church in Orange, the Catholic War Veterans of the US Auxiliary Post 1562 in Derby, CT, and she was a member of the Bridgeport Hospital Alumnae Association. Florence was an avid sport fan and traveler. She loved all sports, but was passionate about the New York Giants and traveled to stadiums around the country to watch them play. Her travels also took her to various locations in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Florence loved to read, garden, attend plays and concerts or just have lunch with her gal pals. Florence is survived by her two children; Dr. David Stapor and his wife Ann of Pittsburgh, PA and Margaret Stapor Costa and her husband John of Norwalk, CT, four cherished grandchildren; Kathryn and Daniel Stapor and Sara and Leigh Costa, as well as several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. A brother, Raymond Gurdak, predeceases her. Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Monday, May 9, 2011 from 9 to 10:30 AM. Her funeral procession will then leave for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. Michaelís Church in Derby, CT. Burial will follow at Mt. St. Peters Cemetery, also in Derby.
